Samsung: Rugged devices intended to withstand the oil field

When it comes to energy fieldwork, workers require technology that can stand up to a range of working environments. Businesses operating in the oil fields want to equip their employees with rugged devices that can withstand the toughest environments..

Fortunately, Samsung offers a ruggedized lineup built for people who work in harsh environments that lie beyond office walls, where reliability and safety are an absolute must. Samsung devices give workers in the oil field easy access to applications that tackle real-world challenges, both on-site and off-site.

The Samsung rugged device lineup includes: 10.1” Galaxy Tab Active Pro, the recently launched 8.0” Galaxy Tab Active3 tablet, Galaxy XCover Pro smartphone, and the Galaxy Watch3 smartwatch.

Designed for harsh environments

The sub-zero temperatures, varying terrain, and proximity to heavy machinery demands that a field workers’ full suite of tools are heavy-duty, and devices shouldn’t be an exception. That’s why Samsung designed these rugged devices with field workers in mind.

Engineered to perform in the harshest work environments, the Samsung rugged line up is MIL-STD-810 tested,[1], ensuring their durability against drops, shocks, vibrations and extreme temperatures. The IP68-rated[2] devices are equipped for the toughest of environments, and field workers can continue wearing gloves due to enhanced touch sensitivity.[3] With the Galaxy Watch3 (also MIL-STD-810G[4] tested according to U.S. military specification and IP68-rated[5]), if a worker experiences an adverse event such as a fall, they can instantly send an SOS call with location detection to reach immediate support or help. On a day-to-day basis, they can also get important updates and notifications from applications, right on their wrist.

Safe in Hazardous Areas

Environments with the potential for an explosive atmosphere are designated as hazardous or classified areas. Those areas are broken down further depending on the risk level and identified either with a specific Class & Division or Zone rating depending on the classification system used. To operate safely in these hazardous areas, devices require an additional layer of protection and certification to ensure those devices can operate safely in potentially explosive atmospheres. Samsung works with partners like Pepperl+Fuchs who modify and 3rd party certify[6] rugged Galaxy devices for use in these various hazardous areas. Using properly certified devices ensures peace of mind when taking your devices into hazardous areas.

“Mobile devices need to meet demanding requirements in order to be suitable for industrial use and must be designed to comply with a range of regulations and legal safety requirements for specific hazardous areas,” said Lothar Berger, Director, Global Mobile Team, Pepperl+Fuchs Inc.

“The Pepperl+Fuchs brand, ECOM, offers one of the most robust devices for working in hazardous areas and rugged environments,” he noted. “The Tab-Ex series – based on Samsung Galaxy Tab Active series – counts The Tab-Ex® Pro for Zone 2/22 and Class I Division 2 hazardous areas as its newest addition. With a 10-inch display, the Tab-Ex® Pro is ideal for viewing web-based content and for use in demanding applications and enables workers to transition easily from field to office,” he said. “The tablet is lightweight and easy to use despite its large screen and rugged construction.”

Created with productivity and purpose

Samsung works closely with partners to ensure field workers get what they need to stay productive. Operationally, tracking inventory is almost a foundation of a workers’ day, to ensure checks and balances are in place on equipment status, plant logs or inspection history.  Having the right tools to ensure these inspections are seamless is critical to being productive and accurate. For example, workers may need to go up close to scan an item. If a camera lags when they are trying to adjust the zoom function, it can affect productivity and efficiency by adding time to an already busy day.

To make asset management easy, Samsung has partnered with PiiComm and ProGlove to offer a scanning solution. The physical glove scanner has been bundled together by PiiComm for Samsung hardware to allow for rapid scanning capabilities for customers in different use cases and environments. It allows the user to have two free hands for additional safety and productivity.  The solution enables the worker to scan a barcode from afar and input the information into a logging system or tracker via the Samsung device.

With the enhanced S Pen solution, included with a Galaxy Tab Active Pro or Galaxy Tab Active3 tablets, users benefit from a more tactile experience with a stylus intentionally designed to fit the unique needs of field workers.  The S Pen ensures convenience for workers, giving them the immediate ability to take notes, manage electronic forms for asset tracking, sign contracts or mark up documents, even outside. The S Pen is IP68-rated[7], meaning its dust and water resistant so workers can continue with their task at-hand, even in inclement weather.

More secure and manageable

Samsung knows how important it is for businesses to keep their fleet of devices easily configured and up to date, particularly because remote energy industry work often places employees offshore or in inclement weather environments. Samsung Knox Configure[8] provides the ability to manage a fleet of devices with ease. If specific devices need to be set up for field workers, supervisors, or even for the back office or security check-in, a company’s IT team can do it all easily with Knox Configure.

“Today, state-of-the-art solutions guarantee high ergonomics, ease of use, reliable protection and global deployability,” said Berger, who added devices used in fieldwork need to integrate easily into companies’ digital infrastructures in a way that supports work processes and makes them more agile. “Sound solutions also include certifications for hardware and software support and security patches,” he said.

Plus, E-FOTA enables remote firmware updates, even when technicians are on the field, ensuring that devices are constantly updated without workers having to implement the changes themselves. The Samsung 10.1” Galaxy Tab Active Pro and 8.0” Galaxy Tab Active3 tablets, Galaxy XCover Pro smartphone, and Galaxy Watch3 smartwatch were designed to be rugged enough for the field and are intended to ensure safety in the most dangerous of environments.

Oil patch businesses and their workers have enough to worry about in the field – they don’t need to have their devices holding them back. Fortunately, Samsung provides an optimal solution for all fieldwork needs.
