Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) is a drilling technique used in the oil and gas industry to better control the pressure profile in the wellbore during drilling operations. MPD is used when conventional drilling techniques cannot be used because of narrow margins between pore pressure and fracture pressure or when drilling through challenging formations, such as shale or salt. MPD can also be used to mitigate most pressure-related problems encountered while drilling and completing wells.
Here are some reasons why MPD may be used:
- Lost circulation is a problem because of narrow pressure margins: When the pore pressure (or hole stability limit) and fracture pressure are close, there is a risk of well control complications or losing the drilled section. In such situations, MPD can be used to maintain the wellbore pressure at safe levels.
- Wellbore stability: Some formations are prone to collapsing or caving in, making drilling difficult. MPD can be used to maintain the pressure in the wellbore, preventing the formation from collapsing.
- Deepwater drilling: When drilling in deepwater, the weight of the drilling mud can cause the wellbore pressure to increase rapidly. MPD can maintain the wellbore pressure at a safe level, preventing a blowout.
Beyond Energy offers a range of Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) Package Solutions designed to meet the specific needs of your company’s next project.
Our Mercury MPD™ package is a compact and lightweight system that offers an entry-level, low-operating expense solution to your MPD needs.
The Mercury MPD™ package offers many functionalities, including its ability to trap and hold pressure on the wellbore, its minimal footprint on site, and its efficient integration into the rig system. The system is available as a stand-alone skid or container for manned or unmanned operations. Additionally, the system uses the same AUTOMATED software as Beyond Energy’s full NITRO MPD™ system, ensuring reliable performance.
MERCURY MPD™
With the Mercury MPD™ package, nuisance gas and associated downtime are eliminated. The system’s fastest-in-industry rig up and rig down time and minimal rig intrusion make it a highly efficient choice for your drilling operations. The system is PRV-equipped to protect the wellbore and equipment, making it a safe and secure option for your drilling needs.

Beyond Energy’s flagship MPD package solution is the NITRO MPD™, which offers a complete package for optimally managing surface backpressure in MPD and underbalanced drilling (UBD) operations. The integrated manifold, a compact 20’ (6.1m), includes a dual choke manifold, 2 x drilling chokes, a pressure relief valve (PRV), an automated backpressure control system, and a Coriolis flowmeter with flow bypass.
NITRO MPD™ Manifold Building
The NITRO MPD™ package offers numerous advantages and features, including its ability to dock directly onto the BIG-B skid, its winterized unit containing all systems required to manage pressure at the surface, and rated for 5,000 psi (34.5 MPa) which can be built as a 10,000psi (68.95MPa ) package, if necessary. The package is also equipped with pressure relief valves that avoid over-pressurizing the wellbore and an AUTOMATED backpressure control system with fast-acting, full-bore drilling chokes that can be controlled locally or via a remote panel installed anywhere at the drilling site. With its minimal footprint, the manifold building and the BIG-B separator can fit into a 40’x10’ skid.
BIG-B Separator
The NITRO MPD™ package is ideal for applications such as Managed Pressure Drilling, Underbalanced Drilling, Pressurized Mud Cap Drilling, and Geothermal Drilling. Trust Beyond Energy’s NITRO MPD™ package to provide an efficient, reliable, cost-effective, and safe solution for your drilling operations.
