As the leading oil and gas producer in Colorado’s Denver-Julesburg (DJ) Basin, Chevron continues to set industry benchmarks in methane emission reduction through its commitment to technological innovation and environmental stewardship. A key milestone in Chevron’s sustainability journey is its collaboration with Kathairos Solutions, an industry leader in well site methane elimination technology.

Chevron’s extensive operations in the DJ Basin produce over 400,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, with more than a thousand facilities and several thousand wells spread across the region. As part of its drive to reduce emissions, Chevron has implemented an aggressive methane management strategy centered around advanced detection, responsible operations, and innovative technology integration.

Pioneering Methane Management

Methane management is central to Chevron’s environmental strategy, with the company committed to ensuring that methane stays in the pipe.

“When we think about our lower carbon journey, methane plays a critical role, and making sure that methane stays in the pipe is our goal. That goal is shared across our enterprise; and, making it part of our culture is a key to our success,” said Vanessa Ryan, General Manager of Climate and Engagement at Chevron.

A crucial aspect of this strategy is deploying cutting-edge technologies to curb emissions. Over the past decade, Chevron has consistently prioritized the integration of new solutions, with the deployment of Kathairos’ cryogenic liquid nitrogen technology emerging as a game-changer.

Innovative Collaboration with Kathairos Solutions

Kathairos’ technology effectively replaces motive gas with nitrogen, an inert, non-polluting gas, to power pneumatic controllers—eliminating methane venting from these devices. In just seven months, Chevron successfully implemented this solution at over 250 well sites in the DJ Basin, converting more than 5,500 pneumatic devices and significantly reducing methane emissions across its operations.

“It’s very simple. You’re taking methane out of the pneumatics, replacing it with nitrogen at pressure, and venting that instead. So, you get essentially 100 percent reduction from methane emissions. And the turnkey nature of the project made it really attractive to deploy,” said Curtis Rueter, Senior Advisor of Technology and Innovation at Chevron.

The simplicity, reliability, and rapid deployment of Kathairos’ solution have made it a valuable tool in Chevron’s broader emissions reduction strategy. The collaboration between Chevron and Kathairos has exemplified how industry leaders can work together to implement sustainable, scalable solutions that drive both environmental and operational benefits.

A Culture of Sustainability

At the core of Chevron’s environmental initiatives is a strong culture of sustainability, championed by leaders like Vanessa Ryan. Ryan has been instrumental in promoting Chevron’s lower carbon initiatives globally, particularly in methane mitigation. She emphasizes three strategic pillars: innovative design, responsible operations, and cutting-edge detection technologies. These principles ensure that employees actively contribute to Chevron’s sustainability objectives.

The successful deployment of Kathairos technology is a testament to this culture in action. By eliminating the need for external power sources and streamlining operations, Chevron continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in methane reduction and environmental responsibility.

Setting the Standard for the Future

Chevron’s journey toward a lower carbon future is a narrative of ambitious goals, strategic partnerships, and innovative leadership. Through the collective efforts of internal champions like Jonathan Pomerantz, Curtis Rueter, and Vanessa Ryan, Chevron is not just adhering to environmental standards—it is setting new benchmarks for the industry.

The integration of Kathairos’ technology into Chevron’s operations reinforces the company’s leadership in sustainable energy production. By combining expertise, innovation, and collaboration, Chevron is proving that the oil and gas sector can evolve toward a cleaner, more responsible future.

As the industry looks ahead, partnerships like this will be instrumental in shaping a new era of energy production—one where sustainability and operational efficiency go hand in hand. To see more about this partnership, visit our website here.
