A key milestone in Chevron’s sustainability journey is its collaboration with Kathairos Solutions, an industry leader in well site methane elimination technology.
Chevron’s extensive operations in the DJ Basin produce over 400,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, with more than a thousand facilities and several thousand wells spread across the region. As part of its drive to reduce emissions, Chevron has implemented an aggressive methane management strategy centered around advanced detection, responsible operations, and innovative technology integration.

“When we think about our lower carbon journey, methane plays a critical role, and making sure that methane stays in the pipe is our goal. A crucial aspect of this strategy is deploying cutting-edge technologies to curb emissions. Over the past decade, Chevron has consistently prioritized the integration of new solutions, with the deployment of Kathairos’ cryogenic liquid nitrogen technology emerging as a game-changer.
Innovative Collaboration with Kathairos Solutions
Kathairos’ technology effectively replaces motive gas with nitrogen, an inert, non-polluting gas, to power pneumatic controllers—eliminating methane venting from these devices. In just seven months, Chevron successfully implemented this solution at over 250 well sites in the DJ Basin, converting more than 5,500 pneumatic devices and significantly reducing methane emissions across its operations.
“It’s very simple. You’re taking methane out of the pneumatics, replacing it with nitrogen at pressure, and venting that instead. So, you get essentially 100 percent reduction from methane emissions. And the turnkey nature of the project made it really attractive to deploy,” said Curtis Rueter, Senior Advisor of Technology and Innovation at Chevron.
