Rather than following the traditional siloed model of project delivery with discreet phases and handoffs, Intelligent Execution enables requirements from subsequent phases be considered and incorporated into deliverables, thereby reducing cycle time and corrections, and improving quality. With an integrated approach, engineering decisions are informed by construction input, commissioning requirements are considered during design, every team—whether in the office or on the ground—is involved earlier in the process, contributing insights and feedback that reduce surprises further in the project lifecycle.

In a traditional EPC model, handoffs between phases are prone to inefficiencies. This is especially the case when phases of projects (for example Engineering, Construction, Automation, Commission) are handled by different companies. Not only is each company required to create and provide handoff packages and have transition meetings, but they also require administrative and management time. With large organizations, the cost of generating multiple bid packages, purchase orders, and general management of project stages can be quite significant, and increase with the number of phases and suppliers.

Back on the service provider side, engineering might wrap up without a construction vendor even being selected, and therefor little accounting for constructability issues, for example. Commissioning will be downstream of construction schedules, and without proper coordination, the commissioning team might be on a ‘hurry up and wait’ approach. The result is often costly delays and expensive rework.
