Flyscan’s Leak Detection service is able to detect small quantities of hydrocarbon not visible to the human eye from patrol heights. It can also detect leaks below the sensitivity limits of traditional SCADA-based CPM systems. Slow leaks are significant. For example, 0.5% of a 100,000-bbl/day flow means a 500-bbl/day leak. The ability to detect small leaks is crucial because over time they can grow into large spills with significant associated clean-up costs and damages.
Flyscan’s service fills a detection sensitivity gap left by current SCADA-based leak detection systems and aerial patrols. Flyscan’s service uses UV laser technology that detects trace levels of benzene in oil or gasoline leaks before those leaks are found by other means. This highly sensitive system which produces low false alarms is being developed and tested with our partner Enbridge.
