In our industry, most companies are continuously managing risk, efficiency, and production interruptions that may have resulted in millions of dollars lost. To mitigate these unplanned events and improve productivity, improvement projects executed, employee training is conducted and equipment strategies are implemented. Reliable equipment that is 100% available and ready when needed is a very important key to success. But how do you truly understand what it takes to attain your availability goal and how do you maintain it? How do you decide what it will take to mitigate future process interruptions and equipment downtime? One way to get a better idea of how to increase system productivity and improve overall availability is by conducting a RAM study.
What Is A RAM Study?
A RAM study is a tool used for reliability management by assessing system reliability, availability and maintainability. It is a structured process to mathematically simulate the random and sequential performance of plant equipment and process systems. A RAM study is also able to estimate production availability by evaluating equipment failures modes as well as the frequencies and consequences of those failures.
