The Need
A global oil producer and distributor needed a vision technology solution for various aboveground facilities across the U.S. to quickly detect early-stage releases and enable much more timely definitive validation and response at a starting threshold well below that of traditional non-visual leak detection systems such as mass balance and pressure.
The Solution
IntelliView’s long standing relationship with the customer began with product validation and testing of IntelliView’s first generation AI powered thermal/color camera-based leak detection system to determine optimal monitoring and performance requirements. The success of the first implementation led to the pilot of IntelliView’s second generation technology, the DCAM system, and the initial implementation of 20 DCAM units at multiple NGL facilities. Positive outcomes resulted in the development and rollout of the IntelliView certified explosion-proof DCAMEx units at their offshore platforms.
The solutions were subsequently standardized by the company, positioning IntelliView as their vision-based leak detection partner. The partnership was also instrumental to the development and first install of the DCAM II, a more advanced and energy efficient system which received the 2023 Gulf Energy Information Excellence Best HSE Contribution – Midstream award. At present, over 100 IntelliView systems are monitoring several of the company’s US and international remote/semi-manned facilities, including pump stations, pigging stations, batteries/terminals, block valve sites, refineries and well pads.
The Outcome
By using IntelliView ai-powered vision systems to automate leak monitoring, the customer was able to achieve the following capabilities and benefits:
- detect leaks that fall below the detection thresholds of existing methods
- visually verify alarms in under a minute without taking a trip to the field
- gain access to definitive information that improve preparedness and response to leak occurrences, aiding in averting/mitigation of detrimental HSE and business impacts
- significantly minimize false alarms triggered by environmental factors, leading to 90% reduction in video monitoring effort
- remotely verify alarms and conduct visual asset inspections that limit personnel exposure to site hazards and inclement weather
Financial savings were also noted in various areas, including technology scalability without necessitating increase in personnel headcount, reduced windshield time, fewer trips to the field, improved workload management, and the typical $15 million clean-up costs should a leak occur.
