FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Calgary, AB, Canada – Over the past number of years Hollywood celebrities have taken it upon themselves to interject into the affairs of sovereign Indigenous communities and their participation in developing their natural resources. The Indigenous Resource Network is calling on all Hollywood celebrities to stay out of the discussion and to stop dictating Indigenous people on their resource development.
“We are sovereign Nations, many of our people have struggled to get to where we are now. The rhetoric coming from Hollywood celebrities threatens that progress” said Robert Merasty, executive director of the Indigenous Resource Network. “Self-determination means allowing for Indigenous communities to pursue what they feel is meaningful. A community has the right to pursue developing their natural resources. They also have the right to not develop their natural resources.”
“Indigenous leaders have been given direction after consulting with community knowledge keepers and citizens. Each community has decided as to what is in their best interest. Hollywood actors must first listen to the communities before speaking out.” Robert Merasty continued saying “wealthy successful Hollywood actors come from a place of privilege. They do know need to worry about where they are going to sleep tonight, or if they’ll be able to afford their next meal. Those are the issues some of our people are facing.”
The Indigenous Resource Network is calling for all Hollywood celebrities to stop speaking on behalf of Indigenous people and stop violating our rights to determine for ourselves what is best for our communities.
